The Death of Chin History
If you think your history is alive, then you may like to read
this. If you know it is death, then you may not need to read this.
Chin, as far as its traceable historical beginning, has been a
people of warrior, who never gave up their legacy to any other people group.
Having their own national pride and dignity, even the sub-tribes of Chin
never allowed any other tribe to rule over their land. In such away, though
there had been lack of literature and modern intellectual resources, the
people have kept their political, social, cultural values and system of
governing the society as an uninterrupted and independent group of people.
Since before the British colonization to Chin land, though there had been no
united Chin Kingdom among the Sub-groups of Chins, the people shared
recognizable cultural and traditional practices and social values besides
their biological identity. That the British colonizers ruled Chins by a
unique rules and regulations called 'Chin Hills Regulation Acts" that gave a
chance to continue the evolution of the Chin history.
Under the rule of the British, Chins gained very little national
and political advantage but lost independence, the greatest national and
political value of the Chin. After the British withdrawal, at the worst, the
fortune of the Chin people was handed down to the hand of the Burman
leadership. It was a historical and national mistake that some of Chin
leaders joined to the wrong way which divided Chin people under the rule of
the wrong people. Chin have no more chance to voice their will to run their
own society. It was the beginning of the end of their own chance and
history. Several times, some Chin patriots have tried to build up Chin
National pride and history but failed due to the death historical voice of
the Chin people. They could not build up a national strength, which would
stand against the ruling Burma military leaders who have been trying to
Burmanize the Chin people.
The recent decade's democratic movement rang the bell of national alert to
make alive the death bones but the worms had eaten the strength of the Chin
people. They are politically and nationally death. Not only they are death
but also their bones are divided. If one makes a voice another has no ear to
hear, if one walks in one direction another has no leg to follow after. So
they are also like deaf. Moreover, when one wants to create national
history, he could not see with whom he is to build up, in that sense they
are blind. Without the common voice and strength of the people they can't
walk further than the distance they can touch by their short hand, in that
sense they are crippled or paralyzed. Knowing that they are under bondage,
their sense is alive but without physical movement, in that sense they are
half death. What role the Chin plays in the world's history? Some may ask
me to grant credit for what some make a voice in the so called NGOs and
IGOs. Of course, lets give it a credit as someone might say that the dying
man's last breath is the same as the living man's breath, they both breath
in the same kind of Oxygen. But the air you breathe has gone through
combustion. Unfortunately, you do not have chance to breath a clean air.
You said "I see something" but not all what you ought to see if
you are alive. So you are blind or half-blind. You said "I walk everyday"
but not through the way where you ought to. So you are paralyzed. You said
"I am satisfied" but not your whole being. So you are partially fed. You
said "I have my own idea" but not free from the Burman impression. As your
inherited land is annexed to a strange territory, your mind is attached to
the Bumanization peril. So, then, your mind is illuminated by the Burman
idea(s). As the result, whatever it produces is the reflection of the
Burmanization. There seems no genuine Chin national and political ideas that
is descended from our patriarchs. Aha! Before our blood is mixed, our mind
has been illuminated.
Where are the death bones? They exist in their inherited
homeland as just a group of death bones who struggle for their own survival
without a chance to forward their voice. For fear of their oppressors, they
give up their own history as exchange for chance to survive as death bones
without voice, without noise. Then whose history are they building up? Not
their own, but their oppressors'. Then where is their own history? Someone
may say "Here I am". I can give you a very simple answer. Yes, you are, but
your existence is has no independent history. You are politically and
nationally death but live as a death bone who has no voice and no noise.
Yes, I hear someone who says "I am building up my national history with my
own political voice, so I have my own history". Aha! You are a blind bone!
What do you contribute to build up Chin national and political history? You
are filling up your own grave-heart that has been hungry for power and self
esteem and history with a semi-national spirited that leads to self
submission to the burmanization. Your history is the history of a death bone
that has no meaning and value for the whole Chin national and political
history. That is just self gratification for human curiosity within a
section of a death bone. You know that there are some who are struggling for
the survival of the death bones around the world. Their national and
political sense is death. For the survival of their death bones they
struggle day by day. Whose history are they building? Not their own. Their
own history is already death. So you are.
Can a death bone be made a live? If you think you can, try it.
